The Abruzzo’s food and wine tour starts at 5 p.m. in Sulmona at the hotel for check-in. A welcome aperitif will be ready based on typical Abruzzo’s wines and charcuterie. A briefing is followed to introduce the tour and to present the plan for the following days. After some time for the hotel arrangement you will walk through the historical center of Sulmona and you will have dinner in a typical restaurant.
After breakfast you will move to the area of Navelli with a dedicated minibus. That wonderful plateau hosts since centuries the cultivation of the “Red gold” of Abruzzo: the Navelli’s saffron. In the heart of that territory you will attend an experience session to know more about this fantastic product. After that you will move to the Capestrano’s area for a visit to the typical and ancient crops of Abruzzo. You will have a look also at the Tirino river and the surrounding lands. At lunch time you will enjoy an exclusive tasting menu based on organic zero kilometres local ingredients. With this lunch experience you will taste the finest and most typical flavours of Abruzzo. In the afternoon you will have a relax time looking at the amazing landscapes of Capestrano valley. Subsequently you will depart to visit one of the most famous winery of Abruzzo. The visit will let you discover the characteristics and the cultivation of the Montepulciano d’Abruzzo wine. This experience includes a wine tasting session. The day will end in Sulmona with free time for relax and leisure.
This day is dedicated to the mountain and it’s farming activity. Abruzzo is indeed the Italian region famous since centuries for his pastoralism economy. In the morning you will move in the direction of Scanno and its mountains. The drive will be a breathtaking scenic journey through amazing ravine and steep rock walls. This evocative scene was mentioned in the nineteenth century by several romantic English and European travellers. The famous italian poet D’Annunzio set also one of his masterpiece “La fiaccola sotto il moggio” in the village Anversa situated in that area. During the drive you will admire villages suspended on rocks like Castrovalva and the awesome small coloured lake of San Domenico. After a pass close to the Scanno’s lake will be then time to visit a typical Abruzzo farm. There you will learn about the traditional farming activities of Abruzzo and you will experience the preparation of typical dairy products surrounded by a wonderful landscape. Subsequently you will enjoy a traditional lunch based on local products. In the afternoon the tour will continue with a free time that you can spend to visit to village of Scanno. This wonderful pearl of Abruzzo is famous for its unique and refined gold manufacturing. In the last century the village set the scene, due to its particular beauty, for photographers like Bresson and Giacometti. The day will eventually end in Sulmona with relax and leisure.
Sulmona is famous in the world also for its sweets called with the Italian name of “confetti”. The day starts from the visit of the oldest confetti factory where the soft aroma and the unforgettable taste of these sweets will seduce you. However this day is dedicated to cooking, so just after you will meet the cooking teacher and you will start shopping in the famous old market of Sulmona. The location is one of the biggest squares of Italy. It is surrounded by mountains and it creates a unique and amazing landscape. The market is a weekly traditional event and has been part of the local culture since the last 600 years. While walking through this colourful market you will buy the ingredients, that will vary season by season. They will be the basis for the lunch that you will prepare during your cooking class. After the shopping in Sulmona you will depart for Pacentro, an astonishing village dominating the valley, where the cooking lesson will take place. You will experience the preparation of typical Abruzzo’s recipes. After tasting and enjoying what you prepared you eventually deserved free time to be spent visiting the village of Pacentro or to relaxing in Sulmona. The day will finish with a dinner at “Taverna de li Caldora” in a beautiful ‘500 ancient palace.
After breakfast and a debriefing session the tour will end with the hotel checkout and a farewell!
